Reply to the letter of February, 3. Author sends two extra copies of the manuscript and informs of the fact that a part of this paper has been published twice before.

C.Shaw suggests to all members of Editorial Board to discuss an important policy question regarding publication of previously published material.

Author constructively criticizes Mr.Bemer's article which is "for the most part devoted to the political history of ALGOL in the USA rather than the scientific history of ALGOL in the computational world" as well as expresses his opinion about papers of Brown and Sanderson.

The author supports the addressee's and Ershov's rejection of Brown's paper. He also reiterates his support for publication of the other papers.

The author informs of the Editorial Board's decision not to publish the addressee's paper, because so much of it has been previously published.

Reply to the letter of 15th September is delayed because of the author's moving from Manchester to Essex. The author discusses the results of contacts with potential authors, asks what the position is about the contribution of G. Colouris.

The author answers to questions from addressee's letter of 10 December. He informs on the schedule for Volume 6. The addressee has asked to prepare a preface for the hard bound Volume 6.
