                Opening of the International Symposium of Mathematicians

September 16 Khorezm welcomed participants of the International Symposium “Algorithms in
Modern Mathematics and Its Applications”, organized with assistance of USSR Academy of
Science, UzSSR Academy of Science, Siberian branch of the USSR Academy and dedicated to the
outstanding Khorezm scientist Al-Khorezmi.

The guests – the most prominent Soviet and foreign scientists – were met at the Khorezm airport by
the chairman of regional executive committee R. Ishchanov, the first secretary of Urgench city Party
council E.A. Rakhmanov, vice-chairman of the executive committee Sh. Jabbarov, community
representatives.

On the same day the guests visited the Pioneers’ Palace, Urgench municipal K.Ataniyazov musical
school N1, XXV CPSU Congress silk factory.

In a city public garden, near the House of Political Education of the Uzbekistan CP regional
committee, a ceremonial meeting took place dedicated to laying the foundation of a monument to
the great scientist of antiquity Al-Khorezmi. Chairman of Urgench city executive committee
B. Kurbanbaev made a speech at the meeting. One of the symposium participants who spoke at the
meting was a well-known Austrian scientist, the most prominent researcher of the life and works of
Al-Khorezmi, professor Heinz Zemanek.

After the meeting a grand opening of the International Symposium took place in the great
conference hall of the House of Soviets.

Presidium was formed of the first secretary of Khoresm regional Party council M. Khudaibergenov,
chairman of regional executive committee R. Ishchanov, vice-chairman of the executive committee
Sh. Jabbarov, and the scientists: corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Science, Doctor
of physical and mathematical sciences, professor A.P. Ershov, professor H. Zemanek, USA Stanford
university professor D. Knuth, UzSSR AS vice-president, academician S.Kh. Sirazhdinov, chief
manager of Uzbek SPA “Kibernetika”, academician V.K. Kabulov, and others.

Vice-president of Uzbek SSR Academy of Sciences, academician S.Kh. Sirazhdinov, delivered the
opening speech at the symposium.

Chairman of Khoresm regional executive committee R. Ishchanov in his speech welcomed the
guests and participants of the forum.

On the first working day of symposium an Austrian Scientist H. Zemanek gave a talk.

Among other speakers were a prominent Soviet scientist A.P. Ershov, an outstanding specialist in
cybernetics, American D. Knuth, UzSSR Academy of Science member V.K. Kabulov.

Afterwards symposium participants watched documentaries about Al-Khorezmi and Al-Khorezmi
collective farm.

In the evening a great concert for the symposium participants was given at the regional Aghati
theatre.
