                                                Unforgettable Day

The day of September 9 at the International mathematicians’ symposium started uncommonly. The
scientists gathered at the tourist bus in the morning, had their photo taken at the House of Soviets,
and in half an hour were warmly greeted by citizens of ancient but forever young Khiva. It may well
be that many of them have already visited this places, but sightseeing in Ichan-Kala evoked a great
deal of interest in the guests. Even Professor Zemanek who in the performance of his duty seems to
have been on a visit to these places, did not fail to once more render the works of ancient craftsmen
on film.

S.Yusupov, history Ph.D., led a guided tour on architectural assemblies for one of the scientists’
groups.

Having visited old relics and monument the guests went to Khiva’s M. Frunze collective farm. After
festive meeting with cotton pickers the scientists put on aprons and started an original contest: who
will pick more cotton on the nearest cotton field.

-         Hey! There’s more here! Here it’s bigger! And you, professor, missed a plant! – Such
exclamations could be heard in many languages.

Franz Zemanek reaches the far end of the field. Well, today the scientist’s son is the best picker!

In their trip symposium participants were accompanied by the secretary of regional Party committee
Kh. Matrtasulov, vice-chairman of regional executive committee Sh. Jabbarov, first secretary of
Khiva Party district committee M.M. Matkarimov, head of regional Party committee’s department
of science and educational institutions R.M. Masharinov.
