Letter
December 26, 1969
To the Chairman of Siberian Branch
Of the USSR Academy of Science
Academician M.A.Lavrentiev
Dear Mikhail Alekseevich!
As
is well known, February 3 through 6,
1970, in Akademgorodok the 2nd All-Union
Conference on Programming will be taking
place with participation of foreign
scientists. Among foreign scientists
notified of this Conference there is a
well-known
Dutch scientist, director of
Mathematical center in Amsterdam,
Professor A. Van
Wijngaarden.
In
his letter addressed to the Organizing
committee chairman A.P. Ershov he
conveyed his interest in the Conference
but made it clear that he would like to
be
invited as the USSR Academy of Sciences
guest.
We
consider that we ought to comply with
Prof. VanWijngaarden request.
Professor
vanWijngaarden is a well-known
specialist in computational mathematics
and programming languages. The
Mathematical center under his direction
is one of
the first European computing centers and
is famous for its works in computational
mathematics and programming. Prof. Van
Wijngaarden is a leading author of an
international Algol 68 programming
language. Development of a programming
system for this language is one of the
main works of the Computing Center.
Therefore
Prof. VanWijngaarden’s visit will
allow obtaining valuable information
concerning
the works in Algol 68 language.
In
view of the above, the SBAS USSR
Computing Center requests to send along
to
Prof. vanWijngaarden an official
invitation to visit the USSR for 12 days
as a USSR
AS Siberian Branch guest in order to
participate in the 2nd
All-Union Conference in
Programming and to discuss with the
Computing Center colleagues the issues
of
Algol 68 language implementation, with
all the expenses incurred by his stay in
the
USSR covered by the SBAS USSR Computing
Center.
Director
of the SBAS USSR
Computing
Center,
Academician
G.I. Marchuk
